Jacory Croskey-Merritt’s hopes of being drafted into the NFL seemed uncertain after playing just one game for Arizona in the 2024 season. However, the former Sidney Lanier High and Alabama State running back was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft and joined the Washington Commanders for their rookie minicamp over the weekend.
“This is a dream come true,” Croskey-Merritt said on Saturday. “I’m still taking it all in. I’m excited to be here, but I know the real work starts now. It’s emotional, but I’m ready to face the challenges ahead.”
Eligibility concerns led Arizona to sideline Croskey-Merritt after he rushed for 106 yards and scored a touchdown on 13 carries in their season-opening 61–39 win over New Mexico. The questions centered on whether he had used a redshirt year in 2019 at Alabama State or played in too many games.
Despite not playing again that season, he remained with the Wildcats throughout the year.
Reflecting on the setback, Croskey-Merritt said, “I leaned on my faith. God helped me push through. I stayed focused—went to practice, attended meetings, hit the weight room. I knew I had what it takes to compete, and now I’m here as a Commander. It all paid off.”
Croskey-Merritt made a strong return to the field by earning Offensive MVP honors at the East-West Shrine Bowl on January 30, rushing for 97 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
“It felt great to compete again and prove to scouts that I stayed ready, even after sitting out,” he said. “I showed I can still play at a high level with the best in the country.”
He was taken late in the draft—245th overall, with only 13 picks left—but he believes the timing was just right.
“God had a plan for me,” Croskey-Merritt said. “This is exactly where I’m meant to be. I’m proud to be a Commander.”
During rookie minicamp, he trained under Washington’s running backs coach Anthony Lynn, a former NFL player and head coach.
“He’s been there, done that,” Croskey-Merritt said. “I’m learning what works in this league and what doesn’t. It’s a blessing to learn from someone who’s achieved what I’m striving
