SAN FRANCISCO — The Seattle Mariners were unable to get anything going offensively against their former teammate, Robbie Ray, on Saturday night, falling to the San Francisco Giants 4-1 at Oracle Park.
Ray, the veteran left-handed pitcher, dominated the Mariners’ lineup, allowing just one run over six solid innings. His performance helped the Giants clinch the series victory. The Mariners now face the possibility of returning home from their first road trip of the season without a win.
In Sunday’s series finale, the Mariners (3-6) will rely on Bryan Woo, a Bay Area native and lifelong Giants fan, to try and avoid the sweep.
Despite a promising offensive showing in Friday’s 10-9 extra-innings loss, where the Mariners recorded 15 hits and seven walks, their struggles at the plate resurfaced. On Saturday, Seattle collected seven hits and six walks but continued to struggle with runners in scoring position, a theme that has plagued them throughout the season. The Mariners are now hitting just .121 (7-for-58) in such situations.
Manager Dan Wilson acknowledged the difficulties of hitting in those high-pressure moments, noting, “Those are tough situations to hit in. I know that it’s coming. It’s going to be there. We were unable to convert tonight a couple of times, but that’s baseball sometimes.”
The Mariners’ top hitters — Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh, Randy Arozarena, Mitch Garver, and Donovan Solano — combined for just one hit in 15 at-bats, along with three walks and four strikeouts.
Dylan Moore, however, provided Seattle’s lone run of the game, hitting a solo home run off Ray in the fifth inning. The homer was Moore’s second of the season, both of which have come against Cy Young-winning pitchers. His first came against Detroit’s Tarik Skubal earlier in the week.
With their offensive woes continuing, the Mariners will look to regroup in the series finale and prevent a sweep at the hands of the Giants.
