Toronto Blue Jays infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is set to begin his seventh MLB season. He wrapped up Spring Training with an .812 OPS over 52 plate appearances and aims to build on his sixth-place finish in the 2024 American League MVP race. Guerrero, a four-time All-Star, avoided arbitration by securing a $28.5 million salary for 2025 but is set to become a free agent after the season. While both he and the Blue Jays have expressed interest in a long-term deal, no agreement was reached this offseason. Guerrero revealed that Toronto’s offer was far from what he had hoped for, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic later reported that Guerrero is seeking a deal with a present value of $500 million. However, negotiations stalled when the Blue Jays proposed a similar total but with significant deferrals, reducing the deal’s present value, per the New York Post. As a result, this could be Guerrero’s final season with the team. Despite the uncertainty, the Blue Jays continue to highlight him as their marquee player, announcing a special Silver Slugger Bobblehead giveaway in his honor on March 31.
Born in Canada, Guerrero has played his entire MLB career with Toronto. The 26-year-old first baseman boasts an .863 career OPS and has accumulated 21.3 WAR across six seasons. A Gold Glove winner in 2022, he also finished as the AL MVP runner-up in 2021. Already highly accomplished at a young age, Guerrero is reportedly seeking one of the largest contracts in MLB history—the biggest ever for a first baseman.
