The Alabama football program is undergoing a transformation heading into the 2025 season, and at least one player has noticed a significant shift in the team’s dynamics compared to a year ago. With changes in both the coaching staff and player roster, the Crimson Tide are looking to build a new identity under second-year head coach Kalen DeBoer.
On Tuesday, Alabama defensive back Zabien Brown addressed the media and provided insight into how this year’s squad differs from the previous one. He emphasized that the team is in a different place, not just in terms of personnel but also in how players interact and work together.
“This is a completely new team,” Brown said. “Everyone is moving differently, communicating differently, and we have a lot ahead of us. We’re all coming together, building connections on a deeper level. I think that makes us play harder for each other.”
Alabama is set to take the field in Tuscaloosa in 2025 with many fresh faces, but that doesn’t mean they are starting from scratch. Several key players from the previous season are returning, bringing experience and leadership to the team. However, as Brown pointed out, talent alone won’t be enough to succeed. The ability to mesh as a unit and develop strong chemistry will be crucial to the program’s continued success.
In 2024, Alabama had an abundance of leadership and team camaraderie, yet there was a sense that not every player was fully bought into the system. Despite the talent on the roster, the team lacked the cohesion needed to maximize its potential. For Alabama to take the next step in 2025, the players will need to deepen their connections, fully commit to the team’s goals, and play with a greater sense of purpose for one another.
There are many areas in which the Crimson Tide can improve heading into the new season. One of the bright spots in 2024 was the defense, which showed steady growth throughout the year. As the season progressed, the defensive unit seemed to rally around a shared goal—to improve as a collective group and give the team the best possible chance to win games. That mentality will need to continue in 2025, especially with new players stepping into key roles and others looking to take their game to the next level.
Brown and his teammates understand the importance of playing for each other, and their ability to foster that mindset will be vital to Alabama’s success. With a significant number of players transferring in and out of the program, as well as several assistant coaches departing, this is a period of transition for the Crimson Tide. Change can bring challenges, but it also creates opportunities for new leaders to emerge and for the team to establish a fresh identity.
Under the leadership of Kalen DeBoer, Alabama is entering a new chapter. The 2025 season represents a chance for the team to not only maintain the high standard expected in Tuscaloosa but also to continue building something special. Brown and his fellow players will play an essential role in shaping the team’s culture, strengthening their bond, and working together to achieve their ultimate goal—bringing another championship to Alabama.
