Louisville has not had a quarterback selected in the first round of the NFL Draft since Lamar Jackson in 2018, but Tyler Shough made a compelling case for himself with a strong performance at the NFL Combine. While he may not possess the same electrifying athleticism that made Jackson a superstar, Shough demonstrated a unique skill set that caught the attention of scouts and analysts.
During Saturday’s drills at Lucas Oil Stadium, Shough displayed an impressive combination of arm strength, accuracy, and overall quarterbacking intangibles. His ability to make difficult throws with precision, along with his strong physical presence, stood out in a competitive quarterback class. Although he does not have the elite mobility of Jackson, his footwork and ability to move within the pocket were notable.
Fox Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Shough was one of the most intriguing prospects heading into the Combine, and his performance only solidified that perception.
“Big win for Louisville QB Tyler Shough after an impressive showing in Indy. Several evaluators told me he was the player they were most intrigued by coming into the Combine,” Schultz stated, emphasizing the growing buzz surrounding Shough.
In addition to his passing abilities, Shough possesses the kind of physical attributes that NFL teams covet in a franchise quarterback. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 224 pounds, he has the prototypical size for the position, giving him an advantage when it comes to seeing over defenses and absorbing contact. Schultz also pointed out that despite his large frame, Shough moves well, showing surprising agility in his footwork.
Given his performance at the Combine and the increasing interest from evaluators, Schultz believes Shough’s draft stock is on the rise.
“At 6-foot-5 and 224 pounds, he has rare size, a strong arm, and surprisingly nimble footwork. Expect him to climb up draft boards,” Schultz predicted.
With the NFL Draft approaching, teams in need of a quarterback may take a closer look at Shough as a potential first-round pick. While he may not have entered the Combine as a household name like some of the other top prospects, his showing in Indianapolis has undoubtedly boosted his chances of making a significant leap in the draft process.
