The Dallas Cowboys face a pivotal offseason after a disappointing season that led to a head coaching change. With Brian Schottenheimer now at the helm, the team has significant work ahead, especially given their current financial constraints. However, ESPN’s Mina Kimes believes there’s a clear solution—prioritizing Micah Parsons.
Parsons has established himself as one of the league’s top defenders, and Kimes argues that Dallas should go all-in on securing his future.
“I don’t know what’s so hard about this. You take the top edge contract—Nick Bosa’s, in this case—add some money, and you’re done,” Kimes said on Monday.
While contract negotiations are never that simple, Kimes laid out a strategy for Dallas to free up cap space and make necessary roster moves.
“So, the Cowboys have no money right now, but they can quickly change that,” she explained. “Dak Prescott currently has a $90 million cap hit, but converting part of his salary into a bonus could bring it down to just over $50 million. The same restructuring approach applies to CeeDee Lamb. A similar deal with Parsons—modeled after Bosa’s contract—would also lower his cap hit since he’s currently on the tag.”
By restructuring the contracts of Prescott, Lamb, and Parsons, Kimes estimates Dallas could free up over $60 million in cap space. However, this strategy would commit the team to these three players as the core of the franchise for years to come.
“If I’m Dallas, I feel good about that,” Kimes added. “They’re three really good football players, and this move would give the team flexibility to address other needs on the roster.”
With key decisions looming, how the Cowboys navigate this offseason will shape the franchise’s future.
