Kupp to join Seahawks
All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp will join the Seattle Seahawks having been released by the LA Rams.
Kupp, who won a Super Bowl amid a glittering eight-year stint with the Rams, will link up with quarterback Sam Darnold in a new-look Seahawks offense.
As first reported by NFL Network, Kupp will sign a 3-year, $45M deal to remain in the NFC West, where he will come up against his former team twice a season.
Kupp was a first-team All-Pro in 2021 after leading the NFL in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947) and touchdowns (19) as the Rams went on to claim the Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Seahawks have seen a major overhaul in their skill positions during 2025 free agency with quarterback Geno Smith and receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett departing.
Chargers sign Super Bowl champion guard Mekhi Becton
Los Angeles Chargers beefed up their offensive line by signing guard Mekhi Becton.
The 6-7, 363-pound Becton started 19 games at right guard last season for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, helping pave the way for running back Saquon Barkley to rush for 2,504 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Becton was the No 11 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets out of Louisville where he earned first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honours in 2019.
He has started 49 of 50 career games, including the postseason, in the NFL.
The Chargers also agreed to terms with linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips.
The 28-year-old played for Houston last season on a one-year deal.
Phillips has appeared in 72 career games with the Texans, Baltimore, New York Jets and Buffalo.
He was undrafted out of Illinois, where he played two seasons for the Illini and started 21 of 23 games.
Hargrave signs on, Smith stays on, at Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings have made another major signing by agreeing terms with two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Javon Hargrave, while safety Harrison Smith is staying on for a 14th season.
Hargrave was released by the San Francisco 49ers after playing in only three games for them in 2024 because of a torn triceps that required surgery.
He is set to get a two-year, $30 million contract with $19 million guaranteed, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.
Smith agreed to a restructured contract after putting off retirement for at least one more season, the Vikings announced.
Rodgers’ expected Jets exit officially confirmed
The official start of the NFL league year on Wednesday brought with it official confirmation of Aaron Rodgers‘ departure from the New York Jets after two disappointing seasons.
Although his exit onto the free market was already known last month, the 41-year-old quarterback can now join another team if he stills intends to play a 21st NFL season.
While the Jets didn’t publicly announce the move, which was a formality, it appeared on the league’s transaction wire early on Thursday morning.
Attention now turns to where the four-time MVP will play next…
Meanwhile, another former MVP – Cooper Kupp – is also on the market after being cut by the Los Angeles Rams.
Williams heading back to Chargers
Wide receiver Mike Williams is returning to the LA Chargers, where he previously played seven seasons between 2017 and 2023.
Williams has started 67 of his 106 career games played, with and 330 receptions for 5,104 yards and 32 touchdowns.
Jones poised to finally join 49ers
Quarterback Mac Jones will finally join the San Francisco 49ers four years after the team nearly drafted him third overall.
Jones agreed to a two-year deal worth $7m with $5m guaranteed to join the Niners, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday night.
The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been announced, said it had a maximum value of $11.5m.
NFL Network first reported the contract.
49ers tightening their belt
The San Francisco 49ers cut defensive linemen Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins at the start of the new league year on Wednesday in the latest moves to overhaul the roster.
The 49ers have cut four key contributors, traded star receiver Deebo Samuel to Washington and saw seven other free agents leave for other teams this week as the team resets the roster following a disappointing 6-11 season in 2024.
The Niners made a big push last season after losing the Super Bowl in overtime to Kansas City the previous year but fell far short because of a slew of injuries and players underperforming.
General manager John Lynch said last month that the Niners would look to become younger and cheaper in 2025 and the moves made already this month are a major part of that.
Lawrence leaves Cowboys for Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks reeled in veteran defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence on Wednesday with a three-year deal worth a reported $42 million.
The deal for the Dallas Cowboys standout includes $18million guaranteed.
Seattle’s defensive coordinator is Aden Durde, Dallas’ defensive line coach from 2021 to 2023.
Lawrence, a four-time Pro Bowler, has 61.5 sacks in 11 seasons, all with the Cowboys since they signed him as a second-round pick in 2014.
Browns? Giants? Wilson seeks third club in four years
Free-agent quarterback Russell Wilson will meet with both the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants this week as he looks to join his third team in four seasons, according to reports.
The 36-year-old played his first 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, but has been on the move of late after playing two seasons with the Denver Broncos and spending last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Wilson passed for 2,482 yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions in 11 starts for the Steelers last season, while going 6-5.
He missed time with a calf injury as the Steelers ended the season 10-7 and lost 28-14 to the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
Dolphins strengthen defensive options
The Miami Dolphins brought back two defensive contributors on Wednesday, re-signing linebacker Quinton Bell and defensive back Elijah Campbell.
Bell had 23 tackles (13 solo), one sack, one pass defensed and one forced fumble in 17 games for the Dolphins last season. He has played in 27 games with three starts in four seasons with Tampa Bay (2020), Atlanta (2022) and Miami (2023-24).
Campbell has played four seasons in Miami (2021-24), with 24 tackles (14 solo), two passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 55 games with three starts. He has also recorded 16 special teams tackles (11 solo) and played in two postseason games with the Dolphins.
Also Wednesday, Miami re-signed offensive tackle Jackson Carman and wide receiver Dee Eskridge.
Kupp: Best is yet to come
Cooper Kupp has taken to social media following his departure from the Los Angeles Rams.
“Eight years of incredible memories,” he wrote.
“We talked often about the Rams being back in LA and how we would grow to be something special here. And there was frustration early on around getting the buy in from the people of LA.
“But we knew at the end of the day, it’s about providing moments. Shared experiences. The things that parents and their children will talk about and remember forever.
“That is what makes the ending of these last eight years so difficult. It’s the ending of something we have enjoyed building with you.
“Thank you for these shared moments. Thank you LA for welcoming my family with open arms and allowing us to grow here.
“Next chapter starts now. Best is yet to come.”
Bears sign former-Chiefs guard Thuney
The Chicago Bears have bolstered their roster with the signing of four-time Super Bowl-winning guard Joe Thuney.
Rams sign Harris, Jackson from Steelers
The Los Angeles Chargers have agreed terms with running back Najee Harris and cornerback Donte Jackson.
Since being selected at No. 24 overall by Pittsburgh in the 2021 NFL Draft, Harris has started all 71 career games for the Steelers, including the postseason.
He is one of just eight players in NFL history to record at least 1,000 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns in each of the first four seasons of a career, and is also the only NFL player over the last four years to top 1,000 yards on the ground each season.
Free-agent Jackson, who follows Harris to Los Angeles after a season in Pittsburgh, is one of just six NFL players over the last seven seasons to have at least 15 interceptions, 15 tackles for loss, 50 pass breakups and an interception returned for a touchdown.
Browns bring in QB Pickett
The Cleveland Browns have signed quarterback Kenny Pickett after agreeing a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Super Bowl-winning Slay joins Steelers
Philadelphia’s Super Bowl-winning cornerback Darius Slay has joined the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year deal.
Cowboys bring in cornerback Elam
The Dallas Cowboys acquired cornerback Kaiir Elam from Buffalo on Wednesday, adding depth to a position with some questions as the Bills decided to move on from their 2022 first-round draft pick.
The Bills acquired two draft picks – a 2025 fifth-round selection and a 2026 seventh-rounder – while giving up a 2025 sixth-round choice to the Cowboys.
Elam joins a group with two established starters in Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland, but Diggs might not be ready for the start of the season coming off the 2021 All-Pro’s second major knee surgery in as many years.
Dallas also lost reliable nickel cornerback Jourdan Lewis to Jacksonville in free agency. Lewis spent his eight seasons with the Cowboys.
Kupp released by Rams
The Los Angles Rams cut Super Bowl 56 MVP Cooper Kupp after being unable to find a trade partner for their former No. 1 wide receiver.
The Rams officially moved on from the 2021 AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year at the start of the league year on Wednesday.
Kupp announced last month that the Rams were trying to trade him despite his desire to remain with the team, but with him being owed $20 million this season, no other team was willing to make a trade.
The Rams will take on $22.3 million in dead cap money with $14.8 million coming this year and the rest in 2026 based on the three-year, $80.1 million extension he signed following his transcendent 2021 season.
Kupp won the receiving triple crown and Super Bowl MVP in the 2021 season when he caught 145 passes for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns. Kupp added 33 catches for 478 yards and six TDs in the postseason, including the game-winning touchdown in a Super Bowl win over Cincinnati on the Rams homefield.
But Kupp’s production tailed off in the past three seasons when he hadn’t played more than 12 games in any season because of injuries and hasn’t had 900 yards receiving in any season.
