Before the Division Showdown, the Bills dedocument the Veteran Defensive.

The Buffalo Bills have parted ways with veteran defensive end Casey Toohill, a move that could signal more opportunities for a rookie to step into a larger role.

On December 17, the Bills announced Toohill’s release as part of a series of roster adjustments, which included the return of a rookie offensive lineman. Although Toohill remains a candidate for the practice squad, some analysts believe his departure paves the way for rookie pass rusher Javon Solomon to see increased playing time.

Toohill’s Release Comes Amid Roster Shifts
Toohill, who joined the Bills this offseason, contributed depth to the defensive line but struggled to secure a consistent impact. He played in 13 games this season, registering 14 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 pass deflection before missing last week’s game against the Detroit Lions due to a rib injury.

As reported by SI.com’s Ralph Ventre, the return of veteran pass rusher Dawuane Smoot made Toohill’s role expendable. Smoot’s addition further solidified a rotation featuring Greg Rousseau, AJ Epenesa, Von Miller, and rookie Javon Solomon. Should Toohill clear waivers, Buffalo may consider bringing him back to the practice squad.

CBS Sports analyst Chris Trapasso highlighted Solomon’s promising performance against the Lions, where the rookie notably held his own against All-Pro tackle Penei Sewell. Trapasso speculated that Solomon’s rising presence could play a key role as the season progresses.

Bills Reinstate Rookie Lineman
Toohill’s departure allowed the Bills to activate rookie offensive lineman Tylan Grable from injured reserve. Drafted 204th overall in 2024, the UCF product impressed coaches early in the season, earning a spot ahead of Ryan Van Demark before sustaining an abdominal injury in Week 3.

With Grable’s return, the Bills add depth to their offensive line at a crucial point in the season. Having clinched their fifth consecutive AFC East title, the Bills now focus on solidifying playoff positioning. To challenge the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC’s top seed, Buffalo will likely need wins in their final three games against the New England Patriots (twice) and the New York Jets.

The Bills are aiming to build momentum for a potential Super Bowl run as they close out the regular season.
