Rotational edge rusher released by the Bills to make room on the roster for rookie return

The Buffalo Bills adjusted their 53-man roster on Tuesday, replacing a defensive end with an offensive tackle.

Rookie offensive lineman Tylan Grable, who joined the Bills as the 204th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was activated from Injured Reserve (IR) just before the expiration of his 21-day activation window. To make room for Grable, the team released backup defensive end Casey Toohill.

Toohill, 28, had played in the first 13 games of the season but missed the December 15 matchup against the Detroit Lions due to a rib injury. In his first year with the Bills, the former seventh-round pick contributed as a rotational player, averaging 15.5 snaps per game and recording 14 tackles, 1.0 sack, and one pass deflection. However, the return of Dawuane Smoot reduced the team’s need for Toohill. During their win over Detroit, Buffalo relied on Greg Rousseau, AJ Epenesa, Von Miller, and Javon Solomon alongside Smoot. If Toohill clears waivers, the Bills may consider bringing him back on a practice squad deal.

Grable had shown promise in the preseason, earning praise for his performance before an abdominal injury in Week 3 placed him on IR. The injury sidelined him for over two months, but he returned to practice as a full participant starting November 27.

Now fully activated, Grable will be available when the Bills (11-3) face the New England Patriots (3-11) on December 22 at Highmark Stadium.
