Auburn Linebacker Enters Transfer Portal Amid Program Struggles

Auburn’s football program suffered a setback as junior linebacker Laquan Robinson announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Friday. This comes after a challenging second season under head coach Hugh Freeze, with the Tigers finishing 5-7 overall and 14th in the SEC with a 2-6 conference record. The disappointing season has placed Freeze under increasing pressure as he heads into 2025.

Robinson, a former 4-star recruit from Greenville Academy, joined Auburn for the 2024 season but primarily served as a practice player, recording just one tackle. Standing at 6’1″ and weighing 204 pounds, Robinson was highly sought after in high school by programs like Miss, South Carolina, and Tennesseeā€”teams that may now pursue him again.

Despite Auburn’s struggles, the defense showed improvement under Freeze, ranking ninth in the SEC for points allowed per game (21.3). This was a commendable effort considering the Tigers faced the 19th toughest schedule in the nation. However, offensive struggles, particularly at quarterback, contributed to several key losses, including defeats against unranked teams like Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas.

After an early-season loss to Cal, Auburn needed three straight wins to end the season at.500 but fell short with a 28-14 defeat against No. 11 Alabama in the Iron Bowl, leaving Freeze 0-2 against the Crimson Tide.

As Auburn prepares for 2025, the departure of players like Robinson highlights the mounting challenges facing Freeze’s program. While Athletic Director John Cohen has shown patience, the upcoming season could be make-or-break for Freeze and the Tigers.
