Officials in Nassau Request Public Help in Tracking Down the Individual Who Left a Dog on Parkway
The public is being asked to assist Nassau officials in identifying the person who abandoned Roxi, a 4-year-old English mastiff who was discovered tied to a light pole on the Southern State Parkway earlier this week. The dog was left near Exit 21 with a bowl of food and a handwritten note asking for her to “get good care.”
Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly emphasized the importance of community involvement in this case. “We’re asking anyone who recognizes Roxi to please call the state police or my office. We will ensure that any leads are promptly shared with investigators,” she said.
The incident has drawn widespread attention and compassion from the public. Hempstead Town Supervisor Donald X. Clavin Jr. expressed gratitude for the overwhelming response. “We’ve received more than 50 phone calls from people all over, including California and Washington, as well as many locals here in Wantagh,” Clavin stated. “This tragedy can be turned into something positive, as it’s clear Roxi is in need of a loving home, and people are ready to provide that.”
According to Clavin, approximately 25 individuals from the metropolitan area have already visited the Hempstead Animal Shelter in person to express interest in adopting Roxi. However, officials clarified that the investigation must be completed before any adoption decisions are made.
When Roxi was found by New York State Troopers on Monday morning, she was underweight and infested with fleas but otherwise in fair condition. Ashley Behrens, the director of the Hempstead Animal Shelter, described Roxi as a bit anxious, likely due to her traumatic experience. “Her teeth and coat are in good condition, but she’s currently underweight, at 121 pounds, when she ideally should weigh between 141 and 150 pounds,” Behrens explained.
The discovery of Roxi on the parkway shoulder was made possible by a commuter who noticed the dog during their morning drive and contacted authorities. New York State Troopers responded quickly, ensuring Roxi was safely transported to the animal shelter later that morning.
While Roxi has garnered significant attention and numerous adoption offers, Clavin reminded the public that she is not the only animal in need of a home. “We have many animals at the shelter who are equally deserving of care and affection,” he said, encouraging prospective adopters to consider giving these animals a second chance as well.
Officials have stressed the importance of holding accountable the individual who abandoned Roxi in such a vulnerable state. They are urging anyone with information about Roxi’s owner or the circumstances leading to her abandonment to contact the New York State Police at 631-756-3300.
This incident has not only highlighted the plight of abandoned animals but has also demonstrated the community’s capacity for kindness and compassion. With continued efforts from both the public and officials, Roxi’s story may yet have a happy ending.
