Auburn’s Offseason: Transfer Portal Priorities
With the regular season behind them, Auburn football has shifted its focus to the winter transfer portal, which opens on December 9 and runs through December 28. The Tigers have several roster needs, but their most pressing priority is finding a quarterback.
Starting quarterback Payton Thorne has exhausted his eligibility, and backup Holden Geriner has entered the transfer portal. This leaves Auburn with just two scholarship quarterbacks—Hank Brown and Walker White—along with incoming freshman Deuce Knight.
Head coach Hugh Freeze has emphasized the importance of maintaining four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster each year. With the possibility of Brown also transferring, Auburn could find itself with multiple quarterback slots to fill. Freeze has hinted at targeting not just one but potentially two quarterbacks in the transfer market.
Last season, the Tigers were cautious about paying hefty sums for a quarterback in the NIL era. However, after this year’s struggles at the position, Freeze acknowledged the need to be more assertive in securing a capable and experienced player. He also noted that finding the right fit—not just talent—will be key.
“We’ll be looking for the best fit for that extra spot,” Freeze said during a signing day press conference, according to Auburn Undercover. He praised incoming freshman Deuce Knight, saying the young quarterback has a higher ceiling than any other QB Freeze has worked with. Despite this praise, starting in the SEC as a true freshman is a challenging prospect, especially for a program eager to return to its winning ways.
