The Atlanta Braves faced a significant challenge with injuries throughout the 2024 season, which derailed their campaign. As they look to rebound in 2025, they might have to navigate the potential loss of one of their key contributors.
In his contract predictions for top remaining free agents, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter suggested that Max Fried could be leaving the Braves, signing a seven-year, $175 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Reuter points out that, at the same age, Aaron Nola signed a seven-year, $172 million extension with the Philadelphia Phillies last winter. Although Nola has been more consistent and durable over his career, Fried is still considered one of the best available pitchers on the market, capable of ace-level production. Reuter also notes that the Blue Jays were aggressive in pursuing Shohei Ohtani last winter and will likely continue to target big names to bolster their roster. The team will also be eager to show free-agent star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that they are serious about contending for championships.
Max Fried has spent his entire MLB career with the Braves. A two-time All-Star, Fried made 29 starts in the 2024 season, finishing with a solid 3.25 ERA and 166 strikeouts. However, his potential departure is a significant blow for the Braves, as he has been a central figure in their pitching staff.
The Blue Jays are also pursuing Juan Soto, but if Soto signs elsewhere, the team could redirect those resources toward adding multiple players, including Fried. His arrival in Toronto would strengthen an already solid rotation featuring Kevin Gausman and José Berríos.
Reuter also highlights that, when healthy, Fried has been one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball over the past few seasons for the Braves. Despite dealing with some arm issues in 2023, Fried managed to make 29 starts and pitch 174.1 innings during his contract year, further proving his value as a top-tier arm.
