The Braves have acquired a gifted player to take Orlando Arcia’s place.

The Atlanta Braves have several key areas to address this offseason. The primary focus is filling out their pitching rotation. While Alex Anthopoulos may attempt to re-sign Max Fried and Charlie Morton, he has often been outbid in the past. The outfield/designated hitter situation will likely sort itself out, but the major concern lies at shortstop.

Although Orlando Arcia had a strong first season as Atlanta’s everyday starter two years ago, his performance dipped last year. His bat went quiet, and his usually reliable defense became inconsistent. Arcia is under contract for one more affordable year, but there are likely better options to strengthen the infield. This has led to speculation that the Braves may target Willy Adames this winter.

However, Adames is expected to command a significant salary, and while Anthopoulos is willing to spend, he rarely overpays. As a result, he may choose to prioritize bringing back Fried rather than investing heavily in a player from another team. This is where Ha-Seong Kim of the San Diego Padres comes into play, with Jim Bowden of The Athletic linking him to the Braves. While Kim could re-sign with the Padres, he is the type of player who could fit well with Atlanta.

Kim may not be as high-profile as Adames, but he could serve as a solid upgrade over Arcia if the Braves decide to move in that direction. If Atlanta spends big in free agency, it will likely be to strengthen the pitching staff, as last season’s injury-plagued lineup was an anomaly. The Braves are focused on making the necessary adjustments to move from a good team to a great one. A major free-agent signing could excite fans, but the team’s primary focus will likely be pitching.

While adding a big name might disrupt the team’s chemistry, patience could ultimately benefit the Braves. If Kim is considered a true upgrade over Arcia at the right price, pursuing him makes sense. However, the potential for a three-team bidding war for Kim’s services this offseason may complicate matters.
