Harper shared a heartfelt message about his time at BYU, saying, “My time here at the Y has been unforgettable. I’ve created memories both on and off the field that I will cherish forever. I am incredibly thankful for the relationships I’ve built, which have helped shape me into the person I am today.”
He went on to express gratitude to the coaching staff, saying, “I want to express my deepest gratitude to Coach Kalani and Coach G for giving me the opportunity to wear BYU Blue, earn a degree from the Marriott School of Business, and strengthen my faith daily. A big thank you as well to the admin on the 3rd floor, mentors, trainers, strength staff, and professors who have supported me along the way.”
As he looks ahead to the future, Harper added, “As I look forward and consider my future, I trust that my steps are ordered by the Lord, and I believe He has a plan for me. With that said, I will be entering the transfer portal as a Graduate Transfer for my final year of eligibility. Thank you, Cougar Nation, for all the love and support. God bless.”
Micah Harper’s 2024 Season at BYU
The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Harper started the season as BYU’s week one starter at nickel/safety. After recovering from an ACL injury in August 2023, which caused him to miss the entire 2023 season, Harper was expected to play a key role for the Cougars in 2024. However, his season was marked by a series of injuries, including one that caused him to miss the game against Wyoming in week three. After a game against Baylor on September 28, where he played 21 snaps, Harper’s playing time dropped significantly, as he did not surpass 20 snaps in any game for the remainder of the season.
Harper’s Strong Past at BYU
Before the injuries, Harper had a standout season in 2022, recording 62 tackles, three tackles for loss, three pass deflections, and two forced fumbles. Known as a hard-hitting defensive back, Harper proved he could play both safety and cornerback. When he joined BYU in 2020, he was compared to former BYU defensive back Dayan Lake, thanks to his versatility and physicality.
The NCAA Transfer Portal
Harper is the third BYU player to enter the 2024 NCAA Transfer Portal, joining wide receiver Kody Epps and tight end Jackson Bowers. The Transfer Portal window for FBS players is set to open from Monday, December 9 to December 28, 2024.
As Harper moves forward in his football career, his decision to enter the portal as a graduate transfer will give him the opportunity to find a new program for his final year of eligibility. With his talent and experience, Harper will likely have many options to continue his playing career at the next level.
