The Braves may uncover a budget-friendly ace among several quality options
With Max Fried and Charlie Morton entering free agency, the Atlanta Braves are searching for a dependable arm. While the team prioritizes quality, top-tier options seem out of reach due to budget constraints.
General Manager Alex Anthopoulos has emphasized cost-cutting, aiming to stay under the third luxury tax bracket. This strategy likely signals the departure of Fried, but it doesn’t rule out the acquisition of a high-potential starter.
One intriguing candidate is postseason standout Walker Buehler. Despite recent injuries and inconsistent performances, Buehler showcased elite skills during the 2024 playoffs, potentially making him a cost-effective option. However, with teams like the Yankees in the mix, Atlanta faces stiff competition.
Should the Braves miss out on Buehler, other budget-friendly arms with ace potential remain available.
3. LHP John Means
John Means could be a low-risk, high-reward option. Plagued by injuries, the former Orioles pitcher has thrown just 52.1 innings over the past three seasons. However, in 2019 and 2021, Means demonstrated his capabilities with ERAs of 3.60 and 3.62, respectively.
While a gamble, Means’ rock-bottom price and past flashes of brilliance make him a worthwhile consideration. With rotational depth, the Braves can afford to take a chance on a player who could replace Fried at a fraction of the cost.
2. LHP Sean Ma
naeaSean Manaea reinvented himself in 2024, adjusting his delivery and switching to a sinker as his primary pitch. These changes resulted in a 3.47 ERA and 184 strikeouts over 181.2 innings.
Despite questions about the sustainability of these improvements, Manaea’s affordability and potential make him a viable target. His elite sinker could give the Braves another effective arm if his recent success proves genuine.
1. RHP Shane Bieber
Former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber could be a budget-friendly ace. Since his stellar 2020 season, injuries have limited his availability. In 2022, Bieber managed a 2.88 ERA over 200 innings, but he’s since struggled with recurring elbow issues.
Although his injury history is a concern, Bieber’s talent is undeniable. The Braves have a reputation for reviving pitchers, and taking a chance on Bieber could pay off if he regains form.
With creative roster moves and a focus on value, the Braves have opportunities to bolster their rotation without breaking the bank.
