A loss to the Detroit Lions would nearly seal Matt Eberflus’ fate as the Bears’ head coach. Even with a win, it seems unlikely that Eberflus can recover from the dysfunction that has plagued the team in recent weeks.
If Eberflus is fired, it could mark the first time Ryan Poles, assuming he isn’t dismissed, has full control over selecting the Bears’ next head coach.
When Poles was hired as the Bears’ general manager, outside consultants helped narrow the head coaching candidates to Eberflus, Dan Quinn, and Jim Caldwell. Poles was given the responsibility to choose, with Eberflus emerging as the pick, possibly due to their shared agent.
Poles cannot afford another mistake with this hire. Unless rookie player Williams is a bust, Poles’ job could be on the line if he doesn’t end the Bears’ cycle of failed head coaching decisions.
However, Williams could make a big difference in the Bears’ search for a new head coach. While Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields offered potential that attracted coaches to Chicago, Williams’ performance this season is likely to draw a flood of coaching candidates eager for the job.
