Reports, the Lakers are linked to a $30 million trade for Big Man

Lakers Seek to Bolster Frontcourt with Jonas Valanciunas Ahead of Trade Deadline

The Los Angeles Lakers are off to a strong start this season and are looking to strengthen their frontcourt alongside star big man Anthony Davis as the NBA trade deadline approaches.

Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report reported on November 23 that the Lakers are actively pursuing Washington Wizards center Jonas Valanciunas. Fischer stated, “Jonas Valanciunas is certainly a name that’s been floated around as a potential Lakers trade target. He’s definitely available for trade in Washington.”

LeBron James had previously mentioned Valanciunas during the offseason as a player he’d consider taking a pay cut for, should the Lakers look to sign him in free agency. While that didn’t materialize, Valanciunas has remained on the Lakers’ radar, particularly after signing a $30.3 million contract with the Wizards. Fischer noted that the three-year deal was viewed as a highly tradable asset by league observers.

Lakers’ Need for a Player Like Jonas Valanciunas

Anthony Davis, Lakers

Pairing Valanciunas with Anthony Davis could alleviate some of the defensive pressure on Davis, who has been tasked with both offensive and defensive responsibilities. Davis has been stellar this season, ranking second in the league with 31.3 points per game, seventh with 11.2 rebounds, and sixth with 1.9 blocks. His usage rate is approaching a career-high at 31.7%, which is the fifth-highest in the league. The only time the offense ran through Davis more was in the 2016-17 season with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Valanciunas, a 13-year veteran, brings a physical presence with career averages of 9.4 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game. At 32 years old, he could serve as a reliable defensive complement to Davis, helping lighten his load as the Lakers lean on Davis more offensively this season.

Alternative Option: Robert Williams III

Robert Williams III

Another potential trade target for the Lakers is Robert Williams III of the Portland Trail Blazers. Fischer mentioned that Williams, who had garnered trade interest last year after recovering from injuries, is now healthy. However, Fischer noted that some scouts are questioning whether Williams’ strong performance might make him too valuable for the Blazers to trade. While Portland might consider moving Deandre Ayton instead, his contract and preference for a larger offensive role make him less of a fit for the Lakers compared to Valanciunas or Williams.
