Texas, ranked No. 3, has shown improvement on the SEC injury reports this Wednesday and Thursday in preparation for the Kentucky game on Senior Day.
In the Thursday SEC injury report update, Texas football received some positive news regarding a few key defensive players ahead of their Senior Day game against Kentucky on Nov. 23.
Key Players Returning from Injury in Week 13 vs. Kentucky
For Week 13’s injury report, Texas has four players listed as “out” for the Kentucky game. These players are all sidelined for the rest of the season. The injured players include three running backs—sophomore CJ Baxter Jr., freshman Christian Clark, and senior Velton Gardner—who have been unable to play for most or all of the 2024 season. Additionally, sophomore safety Derek Williams Jr. remains out for the season due to a lower-body injury sustained during the Red River Rivalry game against Oklahoma in mid-October.
Here are three important injury updates for Texas heading into the Week 13 matchup with Kentucky at DKR in Austin:
Morice Blackwell Jr., LB
Senior linebacker Morice Blackwell Jr. was initially listed as “questionable” on Texas’s SEC injury report on Wednesday (Nov. 20) but was later upgraded to “probable” in the Thursday update.
Blackwell missed Texas’s last game against Arkansas due to an injury. Head coach Steve Sarkisian expressed hope in his Thursday press conference that Blackwell could return for the Kentucky game.
“Those two guys are integral parts to our program, not only on offense and defense but on special teams. They’re critical. So, hopefully, we can get both of those guys back,” said Sarkisian.
Blackwell’s last game for Texas was a win over Florida on Nov. 9. In 2024, he has recorded a career-high 21 combined tackles and five defensive stops over nine games played.
