Orioles Protect Two Prospects Ahead of Rule 5 Draft
The Baltimore Orioles made their decisions ahead of the Rule 5 draft protection deadline, adding two prospects to their 40-man roster. With 39 players now on the roster, they ensured these players wouldn’t be at risk of selection in the December draft.
Brandon Young
One of the additions, 26-year-old Brandon Young, was expected. In 2024, he excelled at Triple-A Norfolk, recording a 3.44 ERA and 96 strikeouts over 89 innings. Though injuries in the major league rotation prevented his debut this year, Young is a strong candidate for the Orioles’ 2025 starting rotation. If not, he will likely be one of the first to receive a call-up.
Kade Strowd
The inclusion of 27-year-old right-hander Kade Strowd was more surprising. He struggled with a 6.80 ERA over 41 innings at Triple-A but showcased his strikeout ability with a 30.8% strikeout rate. Strowd’s arsenal includes a mid-to-high 90s fastball and strong off-speed pitches, making him an appealing prospect despite his inconsistency.
Other Prospects at Risk
Several Orioles prospects, including SP Juan Nuñez, RP Keegan Gillies, SP Alex Pham, and OF Hudson Haskin, remain vulnerable to selection in the Rule 5 draft. Each ranks among the organization’s top 30 prospects, potentially leaving the team with notable losses.
The decisions reflect the Orioles’ priorities as they prepare for the 2025 season.
