The San Diego Padres have signed Trenton Brooks to a minor-league contract, per the MLB.com transactions page. Brooks, 29, debuted in MLB with the San Francisco Giants in 2024, appearing in 12 games, primarily as a first baseman filling in for an injured LaMonte Wade Jr.
A left-handed hitter, Brooks excelled in the minors in 2024 with the Sacramento River Cats, posting a .302 average, .410 OBP, 10 home runs, and an impressive 15.5% walk rate alongside a 15% strikeout rate. However, his MLB stint saw him struggle, hitting just .120 with a .241 OBP in 29 plate appearances. Despite this, Brooks adds depth and could thrive with more opportunities in the majors.
Before joining the Giants, Brooks signed with the A’s in 2022, delivering a strong Triple-A performance in 2023. He hit .299 with a .405 OBP and 16 homers in 94 games before being traded for veteran left-hander Sean Newcomb.
As Spring Training 2025 approaches, Brooks could contend for a bench role with the Padres, especially given his versatility, solid on-base skills, and occasional power. He also brings defensive value, recording a +1 Out Above Average at first base in limited action. While not currently on the 40-man roster, Brooks remains an intriguing option as San Diego builds toward a World Series-contending season.
This signing provides the Padres with a low-risk, high-reward depth option, and fans can look forward to seeing if Brooks can capitalize on this opportunity after nearly a decade in the minors.
