Lewis Hamilton was left furious by Mercedes during the Singapore Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton has admitted he was left ‘so angry’ and ‘perplexed’ by the different strategies imposed on him and Mercedes team-mate George Russell during the Singapore Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion was told to start on soft tyres despite arguing that he should be on mediums.
Hamilton was one of only two drivers to start on the softs, with RB also opting for that strategy with Daniel Ricciardo. But the Mercedes star endured a tough race and ended up in the pit stop earlier than he might have liked on lap 17.
The 39-year-old switched to hard tyres but continued to struggle. He finished in sixth while Russell came fourth.
Speaking at a Petronas event in Kuala Lumpur, Hamilton said: “I was perplexed by it, I’ve never really been in that position. If George has qualified well and I’m out of the top 10, then we’ll split the strategies. But when we were so close, it didn’t make sense to me.
“So I battled as hard as I could to fight to go on the medium tyre but the team continued to suggest that I start on the soft. When they took the blankets off, everyone was on mediums.”
