USC defensive lineman Bear Alexander has opted to take a redshirt year after seeing his role diminish in the first three games of the season. Although head coach Lincoln Riley didn’t mention Alexander by name, he acknowledged “surprising news” in a press briefing. Alexander, who transferred from Georgia after his freshman year, made an impact last season with 47 tackles and 1.5 sacks but hasn’t started a game this year under new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn.
Alexander’s representative confirmed he will remain with the team, practicing and supporting his teammates. Riley expressed confidence that other players, such as transfers Nate Clifton and Gavin Meyer, will step up in Alexander’s absence as the Trojans prepare for their Big Ten home opener against Wisconsin.
