England captain Heather Knight has been reprimanded and given a suspended £1,000 fine after a historical photo of her in “blackface” surfaced on social media. Set to lead England in next month’s T20 World Cup, Knight expressed that she is “truly sorry” for her actions, which were labeled “racist and discriminatory” by Cricket Discipline Commission adjudicator Tim O’Gorman. However, O’Gorman acknowledged that Knight, who was 21 at the time the photo was taken at a themed party in 2012, had no racist intent.
Knight, whose fine will be suspended for two years, stated, “I’m truly sorry for the mistake I made in 2012. It was wrong, and I have long regretted it. I wasn’t as aware of the implications of my actions back then as I am now. There was no ill intent. While I can’t change the past, I am committed to using my platform to promote inclusivity in the game and ensuring that underrepresented groups have the same opportunities I’ve had.”
