In 1966 the University of Tennessee installed eight-foot panels to the south side of Neyland Stadium. The panels are backlit and feature an orange letter on a white background. VOLS. It became iconic.
Ten years later, the school changed the panels. Now the letters were white and the background was orange. The change was part of a slew of renovations for the 1976 football season.
In 2009 the letters were removed after Neyland Stadium got a new video board. For 13 years they were missing from Rocky Top until Tennessee installed two sets of letters in 2022.
Framing the upgraded video board, the letters once again returned to the top of the south side of Neyland Stadium – and they won’t be going anywhere for quite some time.
They’ll stand as a bold declaration – here’s to old Tennessee.
