The 2024 NFL season has brought mixed results for NFC South teams, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints exceeding expectations, while the Carolina Panthers struggle significantly. After starting 0-2, Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, was benched in favor of veteran Andy Dalton—a challenging situation that Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield understands well.
Mayfield, who faced a similar scenario two years ago while with the Panthers, emphasized the difficulties young quarterbacks encounter without adequate support. He noted, “When you’re not surrounded with the pieces, you’re not given the opportunity to have success.” He expressed empathy for Young, pointing out that talent and intelligence aren’t always enough without the right fit.
Despite the Panthers adding notable offensive talent like Diontae Johnson and Xavier Legette, they still face challenges under new head coach Dave Canales. Ironically, Canales previously helped Mayfield achieve career highs during his time as the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator.
On the other hand, Mayfield is thriving in Tampa, leading the Bucs to a 2-0 start with impressive stats: a 73.5 completion percentage, 434 passing yards, five touchdowns, and just one interception. He feels more at home in his current situation, stating, “It’s a matter of the pieces around you and the coaches.” He remains optimistic about Young’s future, adding, “His story is far, far from finished.”
As the season unfolds, it will be interesting to see how both Mayfield and Young navigate their respective challenges.
