**Seahawks Restructure DK Metcalf’s Contract to Free Up Cap Space**
The Seattle Seahawks have taken a key step to alleviate their salary cap constraints for the 2024 season by restructuring DK Metcalf’s contract. They converted $11.875 million of Metcalf’s $24.875 million salary into a bonus, spreading this financial impact over four additional years (2025-2028). This move has freed up $9.5 million in cap space for the current season, increasing their available cap space to $13.24 million.
The restructuring includes adding three void years to Metcalf’s deal. While this does not extend his current contract, it allows the Seahawks to manage their cap more effectively by distributing the bonus hit into future years—a common strategy used by DK Metcalf’steams to ease immediate cap pressures.
Despite this increase in cap space, the Seahawks remain 15th in the league for cap flexibility. They still face substantial financial challenges for the 2025 season, with significant cap hits for Metcalf and quarterback Geno Smith. Additionally, the team needs to prepare for potential contract extensions for their promising 2022 rookie class, including left tackle Charles Cross, edge rusher Boye Mafe, running back Kenneth Walker III, and cornerback Riq Woolen.
Effective cap management will be crucial for the Seahawks as they navigate financial constraints while striving to enhance their roster and secure future player extensions.
