Liverpool’s bid to sign Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain in 2022 fell short despite having agreed on personal terms with the French forward. According to L’Equipe, Liverpool was close to finalizing the transfer that summer, having reached an agreement with Mbappe, but they were unable to negotiate a deal with PSG to complete the move.
Mbappe has since joined Real Madrid, making his long-awaited transfer as a free agent following the expiration of his PSG contract. He has already secured a trophy with his new club and started the season strongly. Although Mbappe is thriving at Real Madrid, he could have been part of Liverpool’s squad.
In 2022, Mbappe was leaning towards a move to Madrid, but he ended up signing a new two-year contract with PSG in May of that year. Disillusioned by PSG’s failure to meet their promises, he sought to leave that summer.
Liverpool, eager to bring Mbappe to Anfield, had agreed on personal terms with the player and offered €200 million (£169 million). However, PSG’s director Antero Henrique demanded €400 million, a sum Liverpool could not afford. Consequently, the transfer fell through.
There are differing accounts regarding the bid: one suggests Liverpool’s €200 million offer was insufficient compared to the €400 million asking price, while another claims no formal bid was ever made. Despite the discrepancies, Liverpool had a deal in place with Mbappe, but the transfer did not materialize. After two more years at PSG, Mbappe has now realized his dream move to Real Madrid.
