ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith did not hold back in his latest response to WNBA legend Sheryl Swoops’ amid their ongoing clash over Caitlin Clark. For context, Smith had previously criticized Swoops for failing to mention Clark while discussing the Indiana Fever’s success. This omission only reinforced the perception that Swoops might harbor negative feelings toward Clark. Smith described Swoops as “insane” for leaving Clark out of her comments, asserting that it was inconceivable that Clark’s name was unintentionally omitted from her praise for the Fever.
In her defense, Swoops argued that her comments were based on her “personal relationship” with the players she mentioned and posted several critiques of Smith on X (formerly Twitter). On Monday, Smith responded to Swoops’ defense by clarifying that his critique was not about her praising other Fever players. Instead, he questioned why she completely omitted Clark’s name when discussing the team’s success.
Smith said, “Nobody told you to ignore the other Fever players. What we’re questioning is how you could give the Indiana Fever all this credit without even mentioning Caitlin Clark.” He further criticized Swoops for her reaction, labeling it “immature” and adding, “It was pretty damn immature to come at me like that. Calling me an effing coward for calling you out on your oversight? She’s engaging in a level of immaturity—let’s just call it what it is.”
