Dominique Aegerter, rider for GRT Yamaha in the World Superbike Championship, has sustained multiple injuries in a training accident and will miss the upcoming Magny-Cours round.
Aegerter was training in Austria to prepare for the remainder of the 2024 WSBK season when the accident occurred, although specific details of the incident have not been disclosed.
The GRT team reported that he was transported back to Switzerland, where medical examinations revealed several fractured ribs and an injury to his right shoulder. Aegerter is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday.
In a statement, the team noted: “GYTR GRT Yamaha Worlds rider Dominique Aegerter was injured in a training accident in Austria while preparing for the rest of the 2024 season. He has returned to Switzerland, where he has been diagnosed with multiple rib fractures and a right shoulder injury. He will have surgery today to stabilize the injuries. A full recovery timeline will be provided after the surgery, but Deserter will miss Round 8 of the Superbike World Championship at Magny-Cours next weekend.”
Aegerter, the two-time World Super sport champion with Yamaha, moved up to MotoGP with the GRT team in 2023, earning podium finishes at the Jerez finale. Although he has yet to secure a podium in 2024 on the R1, he has performed consistently well, often finishing in the top 10. He is currently 11th in the standings with 79 points, just seven behind six-time WSBK champion Jonathan Rea in 10th place.
The GRT team has not yet announced a replacement for Aegerter for the Magny-Cours round.
