Tomorrow will be the ceremony of the draw of the 2024 US Open
Tomorrow will be the ceremony of the draw of the 2024 US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season. The tournament will take place in New York, where the courts have been redone and should be faster than previous editions.
In the men’s tournament, the big favorites for the victory are certainly Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. The Serbian champion will try to win his 25th Major and defend last year’s title, but will start slightly behind the Italian and Spanish. The 37-year-old from Belgrade – who won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics – missed the Montreal and Cincinnati Masters 1000 to rest in preparation for the US Open.
Sinner – instead – was declared innocent by the ITIA for the positive doping found in two tests carried out during the Masters 1000 of Indian Wells. The world number 1 has shown that the contamination was entirely accidental and could continue to play in these months. The 23-year-old from San Candido plays great on the hard court and has just won the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati despite not being at the top of his form.
Alcaraz may not be underestimated in Flushing Meadows, but the young Spaniard could pay for his efforts of the last few months. The 4-time Grand Slam champion won the French Open, the Wimbledon Championships and silver medal at the Paris Olympics, but did not appear brilliant in Cincinnati last week. The US Open has been a very uncertain tournament for the last ten years and it is the one where most surprises can happen, not least because we are approaching the end of the season.
Many dangerous players in NY
The fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the season – the US Open – will start on Monday, August 26th with the men’s final scheduled for Sunday, September 8th. There are three main favourites for the tournament: Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. Also set the 32 seeded players of the event. In this US Open there is also a wide list of players who are not heads of the series that the main favourites will want to avoid. Let’s see in view of the draw on Thursday night some of the most dangerous players not included in the heads.
As sure as at Wimbledon – when it came in the same area of the draw of Jannik Sinner – Matteo Berrettini, winner of 3 ATP titles this year in Marrakech, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, will be one of the players that the first favorites would like to avoid. The Italian tennis player has in his career a semifinal in New York reached in 2019. The Italian tennis player, who has suffered many injuries in recent years, is number 44 in the world.
Matteo Berrettini seems to have finally come back in shape and what everyone has learned to know in the past years. The Italian tennis player has put behind him an endless period full of injuries and physical disabilities, which have prevented him from participating or expressing himself at best in the most important tournaments of the major circuit.
The fans were inevitably excited after the two consecutive triumphs obtained by ‘The Hammer’ in the ATP 250 of Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, which allowed him to regain a lot of ground in the ranking and approach the top 30 world. Unfortunately, a not very good Cincinnati Masters 1000, with the loss at the debut against Holger Rune, condemned the Italian ace to not be able to be seeded at the Us Open and to risk an iron board.
Berrettini also spoke about the recent Wimbledon match with Jannik Sinner on the other side of the net: “It was a second round and the level was really high. I hope it doesn’t happen again at the Us Open, for either of us”, he recalled, underlining all his bitterness about a result that could have been much better with a different draw.
The show is coming soon
Another non-seeded player who can be dangerous is Jan-Lennard Struff, a 34-year-old German expert and now the world’s 35th. On these courts is an opponent to avoid. Another player who can be dangerous is Tomas Machac, world number 39 and 23-year-old Czech player. Another uncomfortable opponent who has often crossed the racket with Jannik Sinner in recent times is definitely the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor number 40 in the world.
Finally, as the fifth player we can mention the young French Giovanni Mpetschi-Perricard, 21 years old, number 50 in the world by great serve and who has already made his mark at Wimbledon reaching the round of 16 being defeated by Lorenzo Musetti.
